Mushishi (2006)

Adapted from sci-fi manga series by Yuki Urushibara, “Mushishi (Bugmaster)” tells the story of a Mushi-shi named Ginko, a master who has the ability to see supernatural beings called the Mushi, an unusual life form that is neither animal nor vegetable. Ginko travels from town to town to help people who are being plagued by the Mushi and at the same time maintain a respectful relationship with these creatures. Directed by Katsuhiro Otomo , whose “Akira” 15 years ago had drawn him to a short-lived comparison to Hayao Miyazaki, “Mushishi” was premiered internationally at the 2006 Venice International Film Festival.

With silver hair, a missing eye, and troubling gaps in his memory, the mysterious Ginko travels through premodern Japan, rescuing those plagued by these phantom spirits. While searching for answers of his own, he meets the beautiful Tanyu, a crippled bugmaster who records the history of the mushi by locking them into scrolls. When the mushi escape Tanyu's scrolls and attack her, Ginko must save her and, at the same time, rescue the traces of a vanishing age.

Like A Dragon (2007)

Cult Japanese director Takashi Miike draws inspiration from the popular fight-oriented Playstation 2 title ,Yakuza, for this unhinged tale of underworld violence in Tokyo starring Goro Kishitani and Kazuki Kitamura. Filled with cartoonish violence and high-energy fight, Like A Dragon is definitely not Mr. Miike’s most polished film, but it is certainly an entertaining one.

Smallville - The Complete Fourth Season

Season 4 is also the season that introduced us to Lois Lane (played by Erica Durance) and Jason Teague (Jensen Ackles). While Lois's premiere four-episode arc was wonderful, by season's end you'll wish she'd go home already. The "I hate you" routine stops being cute at a certain point. However, the first two episodes of Season Four especially have Erica Durance's Lois at her best; and from these performances, you can see why she was signed on for more episodes. In fact, I had forgotten how good she was in the early episodes until I re-watched them now... I don't know if the character has just gotten a little overbearing for me or if there was something different in the Lois writing early on, but now, I really wish the show would focus more on the two females who are already on the show - Chloe, and yes, even Lana.

Episode 1. Crusade

Clark returns to Smallville as Kal-El - intent on fulfilling his destiny, he goes after a powerful Kryptonian crystal that Lex has obtained in Egypt. Meanwhile, newcomer Lois Lane arrives in Smallville to look into the death of her cousin Chloe, and Lana returns from Paris with a new boyfriend. Jonathan lies in a coma after the events of last year's season finale and Lionel must deal with his new life in prison.

Flawless (2007)

Loosely based on an actual heist , “Flawless” is a crime/drama set in 1960 London, where a soon to retire janitor (Michael Caine) convinces a glass-ceiling constrained American executive (Demi Moore) to help him steal a handful of diamonds from their employer, the London Diamond Corporation.

Though bookended by two short scenes set in the present, the main action of the film is set in 1960 – when flower power and the success of the Beatles were still undreamt dreams, security cameras were a novelty and female executives were passed over for promotion routinely, even if they looked like Demi Moore.
Moore plays Laura Quinn, a US-born, Oxford-trained executive at the London Diamond Corporation who writes herself small don’t-you-give-up notes after the umpteenth time a male colleague has been promoted instead of her. In the comfort of her bachelor pad, she secretly dreams of smuggling out diamonds glued under one of her decidedly female assets: her elongated and blood-red fingernails. She becomes an unlikely ally of the apparently simple, working-class Mr Hobbs (Caine), who works at the London Diamond Corporation as a janitor and who knows a thing or two about Ms Quinn and the company thanks to his low position (it is amazing what people dump in their waste baskets). Their plan: rob the company of £2 million worth of diamonds – just enough to fit into Mr Hobbs’s inseparable thermos he takes with him when he waxes the floor in the corridor leading to the vault.
Unlike recent heist movies such as the Ocean’s series, the niftily constructed plot here presents a heist that would be incredibly difficult to pull of but not impossible; it does not require cartoonesque action or impossible rigs and tools. Instead, director Michael Radford and screenwriter Edward A.Anderson keep everything as sober as possible; quickly sketching Quinn’s frustration with the company before moving to the planning and execution of the heist, which occurs about 40 minutes in, leaving enough time for some formidable yet completely logical twists after the heist is over.
Because of the austere yet authentic-feeling cinematography and production design, appropriate period score and the simple fact that the film takes itself seriously and never stops to knowingly wink at the audience, it often does not only feel like a film set in 1960 but almost as a film that could have been made in 1960 – perhaps starring a younger Michael Caine. Many of the plot twists are not new, but because of Radford’s assured yet subdued tone, they never feel like simple clichés either.
A well-cast gallery of character actors that includes Lambert Wilson (Coeurs / Private Fears in Public Places), Joss Ackland, Nathaniel Parker and Shaughan Seymour lends the supporting characters some three-dimensionality, while Caine is his reliable self and Moore appropriately frigid – right down to her attempt at an English accent. The Band’s Visit (2007)

An Egyptian brass band heads to Israel to perform at the opening ceremony of a brand new Arab arts center. But when the musicians arrive, they are stranded at the airport and have no idea where to go. A few phone calls and one bus ride later, the band has arrived in an Israeli town, the wrong Israeli town, having successfully journeyed from forgotten to mislaid. There, amid the dust and the wind, the Egyptians meet a handful of curious (and agonizingly bored) Israelis who, with degrees of easy and grudging hospitality, offer them shelter, food, distraction, engagement, a few nips of booze, some shaky turns around a roller-skating rink and curious, fleeting companionship. Amid the awkward conversations (spoken in lightly halting and fluid English), the even more uncomfortable silences, bits of music and some nicely executed physical comedy, the Egyptians and the Israelis circle one another warily. Love doesn’t exactly bloom in this desert, but a sense of unarticulated longing does.

Israeli filmmaker Eran Kolirin’s debut feature, THE BAND’S VISIT, is a subtle, heartfelt, and humane work that goes a long way toward dissolving the incredibly complex cultural divide that continues to plague the Middle East. When the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra flies from Egypt to Israel to perform at the opening of an Arab culture center, they are left stranded at the airport. Their leader, Tewfiq (Sasson Gabai), orders the handsome violinist, Khaled (Saleh Bakri), to solve their predicament, but it turns out that he’s gotten the wrong information. By that time, it’s too late. All eight members are left standing alone in a quiet desert town far from their intended destination with no way to get where they need to go. Tired, hungry, and confused, they find shelter at a restaurant run by the pretty but brash Dina (Ronit Elkabetz). It’s clear that Dina is bored with her lonely life, so she talks Tewfiq into letting the band stay over for the night: he and Khaled will stay with her, and the others will be put up at the home of Itzik (Rubi Moscovich). Over the course of the night, Tewfiq and Dina bond, Khaled helps a hapless local discover his inner Romeo, and the other band members find themselves caught up in a domestic situation that is less than perfect. Kolirin perfectly navigates his film’s slice-of-life tone, blending comedy and drama and poignancy without ever succumbing to one completely. In the wrong hands, this material could turn into a quirk-fest that parodies everyday life. Yet under Kolirin’s assured command, it becomes something that feels like life itself. Beowulf (2007)

Director Robert Zemeckis mines the epic Old English poem for his latest action adventure to feature performance capture animation. The medieval tale was adapted for the screen by Neil Gaiman and Roger Avery, and no doubt it bears little resemblance to the text you studied in high school. So the story goes, King Hrothgar (Anthony Hopkins) and his people are being terrorized by the horrific monster Grendel (Crispin Glover). Hrothgar puts out a call to any brave man who can come and slay the monster. Enter Beowulf (Ray Winstone) and his brave band of soldiers. Beowulf is a mighty warrior, and he quickly dispatches Grendel, but in doing so he enrages Grendel's mother--played here by an extremely sexy and serpentine Angelina Jolie. Beowulf journeys out to lay waste to Grendel's mother as well, but soon finds his resolve tested by great temptation. His choice ultimately brings about a new curse--one far worse than Grendel--and he must live with regret, until the day finally comes when he is given a chance for redemption.
Zemeckis first utilized performance capture in the magical Christmas story POLAR EXPRESS, but one certainly shouldn't expect any dancing elves in BEOWULF. The film features enough gore and bloodshed to rival a teen slasher film, and in the 3D versions, the viewer is sometimes given the perspective of blood actually raining down upon them. However, if one can stomach the ooze and innards, the 3D effects are truly something to behold, as spears and dragons seem to soar mere inches from your face. No doubt poetry purists will have much to haggle with in this violent, sexed-up version of the tale, but teenage boys everywhere are likely to queue up multiple times--if not to see Grendel, then to eyeball his mother. The word "quirky" has become the quick and easy way to describe films such as LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE and LARS AND THE REAL GIRL that straddle the lines between indie and studio films and comedy and drama. While JUNO fits into that same category, this distinctive dramedy is in a class all its own. Ellen Page(X-MEN: THE LAST STAND) stars as Juno, a witty teenage girl whose boredom doesn’t lead her to the mall. Instead, she makes a one-time trip into the arms of her best friend Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera). JUNO might have a lot of strengths--Page’s award-worthy performance, a pitch-perfect soundtrack, excellent direction from Jason Reitman--but it’s the screenwriting debut of writer Cody Diablo that makes this such a winning film. Famous for her blog and her book CANDY GIRL: A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF AN UNLIKELY STRIPPER, Diablo has a unique voice and an incredible ear for dialogue. But even the nearly perfect script wouldn’t sound so good if it weren’t for the talents of these actors, particularly Page. She won raves for her first major role in HARD CANDY, but this performance proves it wasn’t a fluke. The rest of the cast, especially J.K. Simmons as Juno’s dad, is just as worthy of attention. JUNO continues Cera’s cinematic ascent after his success with the hit comedy SUPERBAD, and his ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT costar Jason Bateman uses his dry delivery to great effect as a potential parent for Juno’s baby. The last story journeys backward in time, travelling to the Gobi Desert in western China. Here the ties connecting the film’s protagonists finally become clear.
Shaping a new aesthetic of magical realism, Jiang deftly defies the gravity of linear storytelling to produce sheer visual poetry. J'ai vu ce film et il m'a vraiemnt plu et ému alors je voulais le faire découvrir à mes amis Avaxiens car il d'aborde d'amour, d'humanité et exalte le génie de l'homme, qui est la différence et le caractère unique et pour cela précieux de tout être humain. En plus, la performance Cillian Murphy est exceptionnel et l'acteur particulièrement beau dans ce rôle.

I watched this movie and I liked very much, so I wanted my fellow Avaxians to discover it, because it bubbles with love, humanity and human kind intelligence which is the differences between us and the unicity of any person and the high value of its life. Moreover Cillian Murphy is exceptionnaly gorgeous and his performance bluffing.

When Ma first met the rough-and-ready bandit, Cao Erhu (starring Andy Lau) and his trusted Lieutenant Zhang Wenxiang (starring Takeshi Kaneshiro), he had not an inkling that they will forever change his life. Cao, the dark and charismatic leader of a band of bandits, bonded with the dark Ma when this stranger saved his life. At Zhang’s urging, the three swear blood brotherhood. Ma had a dream – he wants to rid China of both the rebels and the corrupt Qing officials. Ma convinces Cao and Zhang on this noble quest and the trio soon engages in many dangerous battles and win. With the help of Cao and his men, Ma manages to squelch the rebels and rises through the ranks. Success has the power to corrupt – Ma soon became obsessed with power.
Cao and Zhang return to their native village, and Cao reunites for an evening with his beautiful wife, Lian (starring Xu Jinglei). But when she and Ma look at each other for the first time, the chemistry is overwhelming; and the seed of betrayal is sown. Ma must remove the one obstacle standing between him and the loyalty of the bandit-soldiers and the beautiful Lian.
