Blind Mountain (DVDrip - 2007)
盲山 Máng shān

Massive applause broke out at the end of the first press screening at Cannes Festival of acclaimed director Li Yang's extraordinary film "Blind Mountain," and it was as much for its final act as for the quality of the picture. The film screened in Un Certain Regard. Even though Chinese authorities forced the director to make many cuts before it could be shown in Cannes, the movie retains enormous political impact as well as being a moving drama. It tells what has been a sadly familiar story in China where hundreds of thousands of women and children have been abducted and sold into slavery. Few of them escape or are rescued. The film's economical style, vivid cinematography and tremendous acting should attract audiences far and wide
.

A demographic time bomb haunts China today. Den Xiaoping’s One-Child Policy has left too few women available for Chinese men to marry, especially in the less prosperous countryside. Writer/director Li Yang’s film, which received sustained ovations at Cannes, uses this society-wide crisis as the basis for a raw and powerful melodrama. The promise of a decent paying job lures the naïve, ingenuous Bai Xuemei (beautifully played by Huang Lu in her screen debut) to a desolate farming village in Northern China. Once there, she discovers she’s been sold into a marriage that is essentially slavery. Her desperate efforts to find help escaping the village and the brutal family holding her captive disclose an ironic pattern of interlocking injustices. Bai’s destiny, including a last minute act of resistance, symbolizes an entire society caught in the disorienting crisis of radical change. And Li, whose film BLIND SHAFT captured the agony of China's unregulated mining industry, establishes himself as his country's most important social-realist director—an Asian counterpart to Ken Loach. ~Larry Gross-AFI Fest

Lady and the Tramp (1955)

Lady and the Tramp (1955)

DVD Full | NTSC | English | Aspect Ratio: 1.33:1 | 75 minutes | 4.32 Gb
Studio: Walt Disney Video | DVD Release Date: September 15, 1998

Disney's first animated feature in CinemaScope is now available in widescreen presentations on video, and it is definitely good to get the whole picture. One of the studio's most original and charming movies, the 1955 film tells the story of a rakish, street-smart dog named Tramp, who helps an aristocratic pooch named Lady out of some trouble and then commences a romance with her. Sweet, funny scenes abound, and the combination of innocence and sophistication would have done well in a live-action picture. Peggy Lee cowrote the songs and provides the voice of the Siamese cats in one of the film's best-known musical sequences. This newly restored version spruces up both sonics and visuals, and a letterbox version is available.

Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street (2007)

Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street (DVDScr - 2007)
English | 116 min | XVid 640x352 | 448 kbps AC3 | 23 fps | 1,4 Gb | PUKKA rlz
Genre : Crime/Musical/Thriller | ftp2share (4 interchangeable mirrors)

Captain Jack Sparrow(Johnny Depp) and Borat (Sacha Baron Cohen) star in this bloody tale of musical crime from the interpretation of gothic director Tim Burton. Based on Steven Sondheim’s Broadway musical, the film tells the quest of revenge of Benjamin Barker a.k.a. Sweeney Todd (Mr. Depp) who goes on a murderous rampage around London. Mr.Burton’s adaptation has been quoted by critic as “….dark and terrifying as any motion picture in recent memory, not excluding the bloody installments in the “Saw” franchise. Indeed, “Sweeney” is as much a horror film as a musical: It is cruel in its effects and radical in its misanthropy, expressing a breathtakingly, rigorously pessimistic view of human nature. It is also something close to a masterpiece, a work of extreme — I am tempted to say evil — genius.”. Also starring Helena Bonham Carter and Alan Rickman.
.

With its rivers of blood, this adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical isn't for the faint of heart--or stomach. But thanks to the black humor, impeccable production design, and gorgeous music, Tim Burton fans will want to sing after seeing SWEENEY TODD. For his sixth collaboration with the director, Johnny Depp stars as Benjamin Barker aka Sweeney Todd, a barber falsely imprisoned by Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman). After leaving prison, he comes back to Victorian London to find his wife poisoned and his daughter held captive. As he plots his revenge, Sweeney joins forces with Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), and while he preys on clients asking for a shave, his new partner turns the bodies into baked goods. But the judge still lives, and the razor-wielding madman wants his vengeance. Though it's a musical, SWEENEY TODD has more in common with Italian horror films such as SUSPIRIA than it does with CHICAGO. Even the horror-musical hybrid LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS pales in comparison to the darkness found here. Previous Burton-Depp pairings have veered toward the macabre, but this reaches a glorious new level. Though they've made excellent films apart, their partnership has produced some of their best work, including EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, ED WOOD, and now SWEENEY TODD. Depp demonstrates his rock-band roots as the antihero of the title with another amazing performance, while Bonham Carter is both hilarious and heartbreaking as the eager Mrs. Lovett. But credit also belongs to production designer Dante Ferretti, director of photography Dariusz Wolski, and, of course, Burton, for showing a sooty London that is just as dark as the film's subject matter. Source composer Sondheim should also be recognized for the haunting songs that threaten to stick in viewers' heads, but the film as a whole also deserves to be remembered for its beauty and brutality. ~Rotten Tomatoes

American Beauty (1999)

American Beauty (1999)

American Beauty (1999)
958 MB | DVDRIP | AVI | XviD 1.1.0 Beta 2 | 720 x 576 | 25 fps | MP3 44100Hz 112 kb/s tot , Joint Stereo | Audio: English | Subtitles: English
Genre: Drama

American Beauty is a triumph of acting, writing and directing that defies glib description. Is the film farce, tragedy, thriller, fantasy, sitcom, skin flick or moral fable? Yes to all of the above.

Kevin Spacey, in a knockout performance, nails every comic and poignant nuance in the role of Lester Burnham, a suburban Everyman whose life is coming apart. We first meet Lester when he's jerking off in the shower. "Funny thing is," he says in voiceover narration, "this is the high point of my day." Lester's not kidding. His wife, Carolyn, acted with go-for-broke intensity by Annette Bening, is an emotionally clenched real estate agent. Carolyn's turn-ons - her rose garden, money and motivational tapes, and the image of success she strives to maintain - do not include her husband. "See the way the handle on her pruning shears matches her gardening clogs?" asks Lester. "That's not an accident."

So far, so sitcom. Or so you might think, since screenwriter Alan Ball, making his feature debut, has previously done TV time on Grace Under Fire and Cybill. ... But there are no network rules to constrict Ball this time. As a result, he's done something extraordinary: He's turned the cliches of sitcom upside down. His marvel of a screenplay puts flesh on stereotypes and then - testing for signs of humanity - pricks them until they bleed. The clever brushstrokes of television writing yield to a depth of characterization that allows for fear, feeling and that network bugaboo, ambiguity. The suburbanites of American Beauty - young and old - have interior lives that encompass different ideas of beauty and truth. You don't peg these people at a glance; they keep springing surprises.

Take Lester. Right off the bat, he tells us he'll be dead in less than a year. Who'd kill this unremarkable man? In waking up from the slumber of suburbia, Lester manages to piss off family, friends and neighbors by speaking the truth. He tells his boss at the media publication where he's been whoring for the advertising industry for fourteen years that "my job consists of basically masking my contempt for the assholes in charge." He prefers working at a burger joint, trying to recapture the remembered joy of his adolescence. In bed next to his sleeping wife, Lester masturbates while fantasizing about Angela (Mena Suvari), a high school Lolita he dreams of bathing in a tub full of roses. When Carolyn wakes up appalled, he says, "Guess what? The new me whacks off when he feels horny, because you're obviously not going to help me out in that department." Lester asks his two gay neighbors, Jim (Scott Bakula) and Jim (Sam Robards), for workout tips ("I want to look good naked") and buys pot from Ricky Fitts (Wes Bentley), the kid pusher and former mental patient next door. Colonel Fitts (Chris Cooper), Ricky's ramrod Marine dad, is as oblivious to his son's drug activities as he is to his near-comatose wife (Allison Janney). He mistakenly thinks Lester is paying his boy for blow jobs. Instead, Ricky is upstairs with his digicam, filming Lester's teen daughter, Jane (Thora Birch), as she strips, crawls into bed and rages about a father who has never known best.

It's the image of Jane on Ricky's TV monitor that begins the film. "I need a father who's a role model," says Jane, "not some horny geek boy who's gonna spray his shorts whenever I bring a girlfriend home from school. What a lame-o. Somebody should really put him out of his misery."

"Want me to kill him for you?" asks Ricky.

"Yeah, would you?" says Jane, laughing.

That's the setup, encompassing whiplash changes of mood, all of which British director Sam Mendes orchestrates with exquisite control and fluid grace. ...

It's the life behind things that American Beauty catches as Mendes whips the audience around from humor to horror to something poetic and humane. The result is the kind of artful defiance that Hollywood is usually too timid to deliver: a jolting comedy that makes you laugh till it hurts.-- Peter Travers, Sept. 30, 1999

Elizabeth - The Golden Age tells the thrilling tale of an era - the story of one woman's crusade to control love, crush enemies and secure her position as a beloved icon of the western world. As Elizabeth's cousin Mary Stuart (Samantha Morton) conspires with Philip of Spain to topple the throne, Sir Francis Walsingham (Geoffrey Rush), Elizabeth's trusty advisor works tirelessly to protect her from the many plots and conspiracies against her. Preparing to go to war to defend her empire, Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett) struggles to balance royal duties with an unexpected vulnerability in her attraction to Raleigh (Clive Owen).

Reprising the roles they originated in seven-time Academy Award®-nominated Elizabeth, Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush return for a gripping historical thriller laced with treachery and romance--The Golden Age. Joining them in the epic is Clive Owen as Sir Walter Raleigh, a dashing seafarer and newfound temptation for Elizabeth. Elizabeth: The Golden Age finds Queen Elizabeth I (Oscar®-winner Cate Blanchett) facing bloodlust for her throne and familial betrayal. Growing keenly aware of the changing religious and political tides of late 16th century Europe, Elizabeth finds her rule openly challenged by the Spanish King Philip II (Jordi Molla)--with his powerful army and sea-dominating armada--determined to restore England to Catholicism. Preparing to go to war to defend her empire, Elizabeth struggles to balance ancient royal duties with an unexpected vulnerability in her love for Raleigh. But he remains forbidden for a queen who has sworn body and soul to her country. Unable and unwilling to pursue her love, Elizabeth encourages her favorite lady-in-waiting, Bess (Abbie Cornish), to befriend Raleigh to keep him near. But this strategy forces Elizabeth to observe their growing intimacy. As she charts her course abroad, her trusted advisor, Sir Francis Walsingham (Academy Award® winner Geoffrey Rush), continues his masterful puppetry of Elizabeth's court at home--and her campaign to solidify absolute power. Through an intricate spy network, Walsingham uncovers an assassination plot that could topple the throne. But as he unmasks traitors that may include Elizabeth's own cousin Mary Stuart (Samantha Morton), he unknowingly sets England up for destruction. Hitman (2007)

Hitman (R5.LINE - 2007)
English | 89 min | XVid 608x256 | 128 kbps abr mp3 | 23 fps | 700 mb | PUKKA
Genre : Action | ftp2share (4 interchangeable mirrors)

Based on a videogame of the same name, Hitman is the story of Agent 47 , played by Timothy Olyphant (“Deadwood”), who has been educated to become a professional assassin for hire. His most powerful weapons are his nerve and a resolute pride in his work. Produced by Luc Besson and Vin Diesel.

Based on the popular Playstation 2 game, HITMAN chronicles the frame-up and retribution-packed odyssey of Number 47 (Timothy Olyphant), a bald assassin raised from birth to be a killer and tattooed with a barcode on the back of his head. There's lots of BOURNE SUPREMACY-style flash-edits and superhuman stunt work as 47 seeks to find out why moderate Russian presidential nominee Belicoff (Ulrich Thomsen) was the client for his own assassination, a hit that 47 pulled off perfectly, except for one hitch: the target's still alive. For romantic interest we have Olga Kurylenko as a foxy Russian prostitute sold into slavery by the evil Belicoff. She and 47 wind up on the lam together but they'll never be safe as long as Belicoff is still alive. Meanwhile, Interpol agent Mike Whittier (Dougray Scott) has been tracking 47 for years; he's on the scent and about to close in. Luc Besson was the producer on this, and fans of his TRANSPORTER, THE PROFESSIONAL and LA FEMME NIKITA films will eat it up, as it's got the same narrative arc, same hyper-kinetic shoot-em-up flavor, vividly saturated colors, swooping camerawork, tightly choreographed fights, and lots of blood flying from the copious bullet wounds. Vin Diesel executive produced, and one wonders what stopped his big bald head from filling the screen in the lead, but no matter, as Olyphant does a thorough job, speaking in a measured drawl that recalls, of all people, Clint Eastwood in his DIRTY HARRY days. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (FS.DVDScr - 2007)
English | 114 min | XVid 576x432 | 192 kbps AC3 | 25 fps | 1,4 Gb | COCAIN
Genre : Western/Drama | ftp2share (4 interchangeable mirrors)

A western film surrounding the private life and public exploits of America's most notorious outlaw, Jesse James. As the charismatic and unpredictable outlaw plans his next great robbery, he wages war on his enemies, who are trying to collect the reward money--and the glory--that is riding on his capture. However, the greatest threat to Jesse's life may ultimately come from those he trusts the most.
.

Jesse James (BRAD PITT) was one of the country's first bona fide celebrities. There have been countless books written and tales told about America's most famous outlaw--all of them colorful and fascinating, all focused on his larger-than-life public persona and daring exploits, and most of them bearing only incidental reference to the truth. To those he robbed and terrorized, and to the families of those he admittedly killed, he may have been just a criminal, but in the sensational newspaper articles and dime novels chronicling the James Gang throughout the 1870s, Jesse was the object of awe and admiration. He was a Robin Hood, they suggested, targeting railroad owners and banks that exploited poor farmers. He was a man with a tragic cause, a wronged and wounded Confederate soldier striking back against the Union that had ruined his life. Most importantly, to an increasingly buttoned-down and citified population leading ordinary lives, he was the last frontiersman--a symbol of freedom and the American spirit, a charismatic rebel who flouted the law and lived by his own rules...by all accounts, a legend. Foremost among his admirers was Robert Ford (CASEY AFFLECK), an idealistic and ambitious young man who had devoted his life to the hope of one day riding alongside his idol. He could never have imagined that history would ultimately mark him as the "the dirty little coward" who shot Jesse in the back. But who was Jesse James, really--behind the folklore and the selling of newspapers? And who was Robert Ford, just nineteen and a member of Jesse's inner circle, who was able to bring down such a formidable figure when lawmen across ten states had tried and failed? How did they come to be friends and what happened between them in the days and hours leading up to the gunshot that would end one man's life and become the definition and sum total of another's? No one will ever know the whole truth. Based on the novel by Ron Hansen, "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" delves into the private lives of America's most notorious outlaw and his unlikely assassin to offer a new perspective on a legend and address the question of what really may have transpired in the months before that infamous shooting. ~Rotten Tomatoes

Gladiator is the kind of movie upon which Hollywood once built its reputation but rarely produces anymore: the spectacle. Filled with larger-than-life characters, gorgeous scenery, impressive set design, and epic storytelling, Gladiator is designed not just to entertain, but to enthrall. It draws audiences in and immerses them in a reality that is not their own. A boisterous reaction is expected every time the protagonist defies the odds and wins a conflict, or changes the tide of battle in his favor. This is filmmaking on a grand scale...

Gladiator is set in 180 AD, and uses actual historical personages and events for background. The events that transpire in the film are largely fictional, but they blend in well with the known facts. The Roman Empire is in full blossom, having survived the excesses of one corrupt emperor after the next. The latest Caesar, Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris), is a scholar who has taken to the battlefield to repel a barbarian threat from Germania. To that end, he has invaded, relying upon the leadership and valor of his best general, Maximus (Russell Crowe), to win the day. Maximus does not disappoint, and the Emperor privately decides to name him as his successor - a decision that does not sit well with Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), Marcus' son. In a fit of rage and grief, he kills his father, then has Maximus taken away to be executed. The general, however, escapes death, slaying his would-be killers, then races home to protect his wife and son. But he is too late - by the time he arrives, they are both dead, and he is soon taken prisoner by slave-traders. Along with his new friend Juba (Djimon Hounsou), he is bought by Proximo (Oliver Reed), an owner and trainer of Gladiators. Recognizing Maximus' potential, Proximo grooms him for a trip to Rome's Coliseum.

Gladiator weds the heroic scope of movies like Ben-Hur , Spartacus , Braveheart , and Rob Roy with the serpentine political treachery of I, Claudius . (A connection that is italicized by the presence of Claudius lead, Derek Jacobi, in the supporting role of a Roman Senator.) The film never fails to be involving and entertaining, and there are plenty of moments designed to stir the adrenaline. Additionally, the screenplay manages to avoid the trap of predictability. The villains are at least as smart as the heroes, and far more ruthless.-- © 2000 James Berardinelli
